Shri Khatu Shyam Ji Temple

Sikar District, Rajashthan

Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is a famous village in Sikar district of Rajasthan state of India , where there is a world famous temple of Baba Shyam. This temple is about 1000 years old, which was rebuilt by Abhay Singh ji in 1720 . In this temple, the head of Barbarik is worshipped.
The story of temple starts after Mahabharat war was finished.

After the war, the pride of the Pandavas was humbled by Barbarik and after that his head was flown in the Rupvati river by lord krishna giving lots of blessings.. The flowing head reached a village named Khatu ( in present day Sikar District , Rajasthan ) , after which the Rupvati river dried up and Barbarik ‘s head remained buried there.
The location was obscured until well after the Kaliyuga period began. After many years there was a cow named Radha , that cow was unable to give milk that is why its owner abandoned it. The cow roaming around reached the place where Barbarik ‘s head was buried. As soon as she reached there, milk started flowing from his udders .

Amazed at this incident, the local villagers dug the place up and the buried head was revealed. The head was handed over to a Brahmin who worshipped it for many days, awaiting divine revelations as to what was to be done next. Roopsingh Chauhan, king of Khatu, then had a dream where he was inspired to build a temple and install the head therein. Subsequently, a temple was built and the idol was installed on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of the month of Phalgun.For this reason, the birth anniversary of Baba Shyam is celebrated on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi

There is another, only slightly different version of this legend. Roopsingh Chauhan was the ruler of Khatu. His wife, Narmada Kanwar, once had a dream in which the deity instructed her to take his image out of the earth. The indicated place (now known as Shyam Kund) was then dug up. Sure enough, it yielded the idol, which was duly enshrined in the temple.

The original temple was built in 1027 AD by Roopsingh Chauhan, after his wife Narmada Kanwar, saw dream about the buried idol. The place where the idol was dug out from is called Shyam Kund.

In 1720 AD, a nobleman known as Diwan Abhaisingh renovated the old temple, at the behest of the then ruler of Marwar. The temple took its present shape at this time and the idol was enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum. The idol is made of rare stone. Khatushyam is the family deity of many families.

The Barbarik ‘s body is worshiped in Syahadwa, a small village in Hisar district of Haryana . Large number of devotees keep coming to take blessings of Baba Shyam.

Shyam Baba Mandir Chulkana Dham

Panipat District, Haryana

Chulkana village, which is now famous as Chulkana Dham, situated about 5 kilometers from Samalkha town in Panipat district of Haryana state. This is the holy place where Baba had donated his head. Chulkana Dham has been considered the best pilgrimage place of Kalikal.

When Shri Krishna (disguised as Bramhin) asked for Barbaik’s head in Mahabharat war.
Barbarik said that I will donate head, but a Brahmin never asks for donation of head. Tell me the truth, who are you?
When Shri Krishna appeared in his real form, then Barbarik asked why did you do this? Then Shri Krishna said that for the success of this war, the sacrifice of some great sacrifice is needed. There are three heroic Mahabali on earth, me, Arjun and you are the third one, because you are from the Pandava clan. Your sacrifice for protection will always be remembered.

Then Barbarik worshiped the gods and goddesses and after bowing down to the mother, separated the head from the torso in one attack and donated the head to Shri Krishna. Shri Krishna took the sheesh in his hand and placed it on a mound, irrigating it with nectar and making it immortal. The place where the head was kept is the holy place Chulkana Dham and today we address it as the ancient Siddha Shri Shyam Mandir Chulkana Dham.
